DESCRIPTION:The October General Meeting offers an opportunity to jump into a statewide campaign sponsored by our State League (a.k.a. the League of Women Voters of Florida). Attendees will join in the effort to notify 100\,000 returning citizens (a preferred term used instead of ex-offenders or former felons) that they may have the right to vote. \n\n\n\nWe will form a work party to collectively write hand-addressed postcards with a note of encouragement to this target group\, letting them know there is pro bono legal assistance available to help determine if they have in fact completed their sentence and can register. Postcard\, name/address info\, and stamps will be on hand. We will have pens too\, but feel free to bring your favorite pen (ultrafine point Sharpies work great). \n\n\n\nSo far LWVSPA has mailed 3900 cards. We would like to get out another 1\,000 by early November – with your help at the General Meeting\, this is likely to happen. \n\n\n\nAll postcard writers must sign a privacy pledge agreeing not to share any of the names and addresses of intended postcard recipients. DESCRIPTION:This is a great opportunity to meet your fellow Leaguers and have two-way communication with League and Action Group leaders.  \n\n\n\nAuthor Sarah-Jane Vatelot will speak about her book\, Where Have all the Mangos Gone? \n\n\n\nSarah Jane Vatelot is an architect and author of “Where Have All the Mangoes Gone”.  Sarah is a Tampa Bay 2021 40 Under 40 honoree. She explains the direct link between the redlining maps\, which identified as ‘hazardous’ the three historically African-American neighborhoods of Peppertown\, the Gas Plant\, and Methodist Town\, and the 1935 effort to relocate all of the city’s black residents to areas away from the tourist-oriented downtown. Later\, in the 1970s and 1980s\, federal dollars provided means by which the city could once again flex its muscle. Officially sanctioned segregation was out\, but similar efforts cloaked as “urban renewal” were in. In 1978 City Council passed a resolution that the Gas Plant district was to be declared a “redevelopment area.” It was envisioned to support an industrial park and residential development. Jobs and homes. That is what the city said would come with redevelopment. In her book Sarah-Jane notes that Gas Plant residents were promised\, “in writing\, that the neighborhood would be rebuilt with ‘new affordable housing and a modern-day industrial park.” The plan also promised\, in writing\, 600 new jobs\, with combined salaries of $5.6 million\, by the end of the 1980s. “While there is little evidence that\, in the 1980s\, the deliberate intent was to conclude the efforts begun in the 1930s\, the goal was fulfilled.” Sarah Jane will share this fascinating St. Petersburg history.  \n\n\n\nAfter the General Meeting Ms. Gwendolyn Reese\, Co-Principal Investigator of the Structural Racism study will speak about combating structural racism. SUMMARY:Reproductive Rights Action Team in-person meeting
DESCRIPTION:The newly (re)formed LWVSPA Reproductive Rights Action Team\, led by Sarah Terry and Amy Weintraub\, will meet on Tuesday\, May 23 at 6pm at the Unitarian Universalist’s classroom building downtown. \n\n\n\nOur urgent priority is to join with partners across the state in getting a constitutional amendment on the 2024 ballot guaranteeing abortion rights. To get on the ballot\, more than 900\,000 petition forms will need to be completed by Florida voters. LWVSPA is now a “Hub” collection and distribution point in Pinellas County for these petitions; our team’s ground game will be to get all the Florida Voters we meet to complete the petitions.
