Immigration Issues – February 2018

This has been a busy month for our Action Group. On Jan. 24, we hosted an educational event where three DREAMers covered by DACA protections shared their stories. What a trio of talented and brave young people! After hearing their stories, attendees wrote postcards to their congressional representative and both U.S. senators from Florida.

This week we sent an Action Alert encouraging all of you to also contact your federal legislators and ask that they vote YES on a DREAM Act that will provide a path to citizenship. If you missed our notice, follow the instructions under “Take Action” on the Immigration Action Guide.

We also attended a rally and press conference in support of Luis Blanco’s family at the Allendale United Methodist Church. Mr. Blanco is being deported after residing in the U.S. for 20 years, with the past four years under a protective status because he is the sole wage earner for his family of seven. Rev. Oliver of the Allendale UMC has set up a fund to pay the family’s rent for the foreseeable future.

Lastly we drafted a Letter to the Editor for our League President’s signature, stating our concerns with the agreement that Sheriff Bob Gualtieri signed with federal officials to hold individuals for ICE after they have been released from the Sheriff’s custody. Watch for it!

Come join our Action Group! Our next meeting is on Feb. 26, 2018. For questions or more information please contact me at
