Immigration Issues – May 2018

Protections for DREAMers – immigrants who came to the U. S. as young children – continues to play out in the courts. The latest ruling would allow not only renewals but also new applications. The best solution remains passage of a DREAM Act in Congress – but that may delayed until after the November elections.

Meanwhile we continue to monitor the situation here in Pinellas County. Handoffs of immigrants by the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office to ICE have dramatically increased. Our next step is to ascertain whether the impacted individuals who are being deported have criminal backgrounds or are law-abiding residents.
