  • Are You My Neighbor? A discussion on poverty in Pinellas and how citizens and elected officials can help

    December 14, 2019 @ 10:00 am - 12:00 pm
Dunedin Public Library, 223 Douglas Ave, Dunedin, FL 34698, USA

Hear about Pinellas County's economic divide and how we, as neighbors, can get involved to make a difference. Learn about:

    • the hidden poverty in our neighborhoods
    • how poverty affects children and families
    • what we as a community can do

We'll start with a brief fact-based overview about families and children living in Poverty by Mr. Tim Dutton, Executive Director of Unite Pinellas. Questions will be asked of additional panelists including Dr. Nikki Carr, Chair of the Pinellas County School Board, and Beth Houghton, the CEO of the Juvenile Welfare Board. Additional participants from local Mayors to members of the Pinellas County Commission have also been invited to discuss their ideas for solving and reducing poverty locally.

This event is a COMMUNITY DISCUSSION, free of charge, where residents impacted most by poverty are requested to participate actively and be part of the discussion! For the first 20 community participants who rely on public transportation, we provide free all-day bus passes to PSTA. Refreshments will also be served.

SPONSORS: This FREE event is the latest in a series of Hot Topic events hosted by the League of Women Voters of North Pinellas and the League of Women Voters of the St. Petersburg area, two nonpartisan organizations that advocate for issues facing our residents, promote informed dialog, education, and community engagement.

    December 16, 2019 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm
James B Sanderlin Family Center, 2335 22nd Ave S, St. Petersburg, FL 33712, USA

JOIN US for the LWVSPA PLANT POWER Action Team.

This year, our primary goals are to educate people about the impact of their food choices on the corrupting influence of money in politics, personal health and environmental impacts; to find like-minded people and organizations, to empower individuals to take personal action, and perhaps most importantly, to have fun and eat good food. In this meeting we will develop our action plan, talk about our budget and get started!

Please RSVP to Julie Kessel at Julie.Kessel@Cigna.com so we can make sure we have enough space and healthy snacks!

You may not know this, but this is a BIG DEMOCRACY issue!
Food and politics are good ole’ buddies.

    Think about this…
The healthcare and pharma lobbies want you to think that drugs and devices are the answer to your medical woes
The energy lobby wants you to think that they are for renewable sources of energy
The Agribusiness lobby wants you to think they are for sustainable farming and humane animal consumption
    .
And they pay a LOT of special interest money to keep you thinking you have limited personal power to take control of your health, carbon footprint, and environment.
