Voting Rights November Column

The state League petition numbers are starting to come alive!  We have collected nearly 10k, but we committed to 30K by December 31st.  In St. Pete, we are at 15% of our goal and need to gather 4,000 petitions in the next eight weeks.  We have a lot of work to do!

Overall the campaign has collected 750,000 petitions which are currently under review. 300,000 (of the 750K) have been verified and sent to the Florida Division of Elections. We are collecting 1 million to offset any petitions that can’t be verified.

How can you help?  Well, glad you asked!  The Second Chances Campaign is asking all volunteers to make a huge push and gather as many petitions as we can on November 11th  as part of a statewide.    Please join the St. Pete Team.   We will meet at the League office at 10:00 am for various assignments throughout the city.  Locations will include RibFest, Saturday Morning Market, and the St. Pete Art Walk.  Email Stephanie Owens if you can join us on Saturday, November 11.

November 11th is also Veteran’s Day.   Let me know if you would like to collect at the parades.  You can go early. We will go early and get petitions signed while people are waiting and relaxing.

FACT: Many returning veterans (6-11% per year) have lost their right to vote due to problems they encountered when returning home and crimes committed, and they cannot vote even though they served their country and their sentence. It would be a good day to wear your league shirt, scarf or pin. If you would like some fliers about the vets getting their rights back, please let me know and will mail them to you.

On November 18th Orlando is hosting The Florida Blue Classic.  It is an annual event with over 65,000 participants.   The League will have a table inside the stadium.  There is also the opportunity to visit tailgaters.   LWVFL 2nd VP Cecile Scoon is attending and the Second Chances Campaign will have an official tailgate party. We need as many volunteers as possible to help from 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM. Each local league will receive credit for the petitions they collect. Please email Stephanie Owens if can join in.

Remember, you can also send the petition by email and Facebook to your family and friends and ask them to sign and return it to for League credit.

Together, we can meet our goal.
