Facing a constitutional crisis? Public protest is one countermeasure
On April 17, 2025, LWVUS CEO Celina Stewart and President Dianna Wynn released a declaration that our nation is in a constitutional crisis:
“It has now been 87 days since the start of the Trump administration. From the flagrant disregard for congressional authority and governmental checks and balances to defying Supreme Court orders to bring Kilmar Abrego Garcia back home, one thing is abundantly clear: our country is in a constitutional crisis.
LWVUS also released Grassroots Activism: How You Can Take Action! offering tips for engaging in a range of tactics to resist the barrage of assaults on our democratic processes. One of those tactics is public protest.
“Participating in protests is an invaluable tactic for drawing attention to an issue. The media’s coverage of a protest can spark a larger public discussion of an issue at a local, state, or national level. The more people who participate in a protest, the more likely the media will cover it and the harder it is for politicians to ignore. Protest events also provide important opportunities for like-minded people to be in community with each other, which can further motivate grassroots movements.”
It is in this spirit that LWVSPA continues to co-sponsor public protest events in the St. Petersburg area and we hope to see many Leaguers out. The League of Women Voters has been dedicated to defending democracy and empowering grassroots activists for over a century. We are built for this work!
