Social Justice Team’s Immigrants’ Rights Panel Calls to Action

Thank you to those who attended Yearning to Breathe Free: Updates on the Fight for Immigrants’ Rights in Florida
We hope you were inspired by our powerful group of panelists which included advocates, activists, and educators. If you missed the event, or want to watch this moment again, please see the recording on YouTube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZUJpFeh9bVk (like and subscribe). Our panelists shared specific ways we can all help in this moment. We believe these were so powerful, we are sharing them here.
Calls to Action
- Attend Vigils held outside of the Everglades Detention Center & outside of Tallahassee or Organize your own local vigils
- Join the Allendale WhatsApp Community to help you organize your own carpool to the Everglades. It works best on a smart phone (the computer doesn’t allow you to see the groups within the community). Simply click this link (www.allendaleumc.org/carpool) to join the community, and then you can join the specific group by date for the Sunday you are interested in traveling down to the Everglades.
- Or stay informed onfuture bus trips by going to www.allendaleumc.org/vigil
- Urge Congress to Make Changes. Call your congress people (daily) and tell them that what is happening should not be allowed to happen and urge them to make changes
- Advocate to end 287(g) agreements with every level of municipalities (city law enforcement agencies, university police, municipal police, fish & wildlife)
- Urge your members of Congress to stand up for our democracy.
- Educate our neighbors. We need to talk to our neighbors so everyone knows what is happening. Sharing on social media isn’t enough, our messages stay isolated within our own algorithms. Remind our neighbors that the $200 million dollar Everglades detention center was paid for with our taxes. Attend and speak-out at public events.
- Volunteer with FLIC.org. Sign-up to be part of civic engagement, or to attend accompaniment training to become a legal observer or to accompany immigrants to their court proceedings.
- Volunteer virtually with FLIC (for example to help support those eligible to become citizens complete necessary forms)
- Donate to organizations that provide legal services to immigrants. Such as Americans for Immigrant Justice, Florida Legal Services, Sanctuary of the South, and FLIC (Florida Immigration Coalition)
- Manage your own stress. Remember this moment is meant to shock you, so take care of yourself, and don’t try to do it all.
In League,
