Senate Bill 1288: Parental Rights

As of 6/16/2025, LWVSPA’s Reproductive Rights team is happy to report that Florida Senate Bill 1288: Parental Rights officially died on the 2025 legislative calendar and was indefinitely postponed and withdrawn from consideration.

This bill aimed to restrict the freedom of young people to access birth control and family planning. It would have required parental consent for those under the age of 18 to obtain birth control or treatment for sexually transmitted infections. The bill would have placed extreme barriers in front of young people to protect themselves against unintended pregnancies and treatment for Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs). Further, the bill would have required parental approval for a minor to complete risk assessment surveys, such as suicide risk assessment surveys.

Thanks to the efforts of LWVSPA’s Reproductive Rights team, allied groups across the state, and community efforts, including an outcry from constituents to their legislators, the bill has not been defeated.
