Serving on the LWVSPA Board of Directors is one of the many meaningful ways for members to share their time and talents. The Nominating Committee is currently seeking members who are interested in serving on the Board. Beate Marston and Betsy Wells, current Board members and members of the Nominating Committee, share what inspired them to join the League and serve on the Board.

What motivated you to join the League?

Beate: In the LWVSPA I have found an organization that I can unquestionably stand behind 100%. Before I even became a member I thoroughly enjoyed getting to know members at the Cocktails and Conversation events. In 2018 the League’s Voter Guide with its non-partisan, factual information was the impetus for me becoming a member.

Betsy: I have always been interested in local and national politics. With time I realised that I needed more input than just writing my representatives. My friend suggested I look into what the League was all about. I went to a voter registration meeting and got hooked by seeing grass root democracy in action.

What did you find enjoyable after joining the League?

Beate: I really enjoyed finding like-minded people to work and engage with on common causes that are meaningful.

Betsy: I agree with you Beate! I also have found so much joy and comfort working with these like-minded humans. The variety of age, background, interest and life philosophies of our members I find contribute tremendously to our League’s fabric.

What have we learned about being a board member?

Beate: I find it is a great opportunity to get to know the structure of the League, both locally and statewide. I got a more in depth understanding of how they are connected, to jointly achieve a higher purpose.

Betsy: I have enjoyed learning and participating in the actual mechanics necessary to organize the cycle of the League’s planning for the annual legislative priorities and its general organization. Also realizing you do not have to be a lawyer or accountant (although they are very important) to bring something meaningful to the table.

Why should new or old members consider becoming board members?

Beate: Everyone has something to contribute even if you don’t believe it yourself. You will learn so much more about the League and what it stands for and the importance of your individual contributions.

Betsy: Once again I agree with you!! Lol! It is so interesting to see the inner workings of our organization, and how our local League really does make a difference with its connection to our state and national League.
