Jackie Azis, president’s recap August-October

It’s been an exciting couple of months for your local league! Our voting, reproductive rights, sustainability, national popular vote, and social justice action teams have been tirelessly keeping up the critical work they do every day in our community and statewide. Here is a brief recap.

August Team leads and the board had our yearly strategic planning meeting. We all agreed that the 2024 election season will be the main focus of the work we do in the coming year, and that work starts now. We must be as dedicated and effective as possible. We decided that three main priorities will make us successful in the coming year: membership, communication, and fundraising. These focus areas will best help us continue the important work we do every day.

September We expanded our knowledge at our annual Hopped Up on Democracy Trivia Night, one of my favorite events of the year! St. Petersburg Council Vice-Chair Deborah Figgs-Sanders spoke to us about local issues at our membership meeting and answered our questions about how to make our opinions heard in our local government. By popular demand, we opened our very own online league shop where you can get league swag!

October League leaders encouraged community members to think critically about the $1.3 billion Rays’ stadium deal. In honor of Banned Books Week, we opened our little FREE banned books library at our office in collaboration with Tombolo Books. By going to the Tombolo Book Registry, donors can purchase books for the library. We also reignited our popular Cocktails and Conversations social series, and we wrote 900 postcards at our all-member meeting to let returning citizens know they can register to vote.
