Interview with Ama Appiah, by Bonnie Hough, Voter Staffer

Get to know your fellow League-er, Ama Appiah. Ama is a local attorney who just finished a term on the LWVSPA Board of Directors, and now spends her time supporting the media and publicity committee. If you see a Facebook, Twitter or Instagram post — you are likely looking at Ama’s handiwork

  • How long have you been involved with the League?

I joined the League in 2015/2016. I saw where politics were going and wanted to be more involved with getting people educated about and motivated to use their right to vote.

  • What are you most passionate about/proud of in your work with the League or in the League’s accomplishments generally?

I am most proud of the outreach the League has done to get people inspired to vote, and focused on the issues that they are voting on. I like that the League provides people the opportunity to hear from candidates, and offers education and information on issues that may not come up on the ballot but that affect our community – environmental issues, food politics, social justice, and more.

  • What is your best League memory?

Planning for the 100-year anniversary Suffragist’s Shuffle event in early 2020. It was a small group of us – but we had so much fun!

  • When you aren’t volunteering with the League, how do you spend your time?

The pandemic has allowed me to spend time focusing on my art, which I hadn’t been able to do in years. I even started my own business last year, offering graphic design, interior decorating & portrait work (you can check out Ama’s work at www.aappiahdesigns.com/!) Before the pandemic, I spent much of my time going to galleries, doing the Second Saturday Art Walk — I am looking forward to getting back to these things later this year!

  • What are you most excited about for 2021?

I can’t wait for the League’s in-person events to start back up! I am especially looking forward to the Cocktails and Conversations events we’ll host at different locations around the city.
