Student Engagement with the League
Social justice, sustainability, international relations, and more, the League of Women Voters of the St. Petersburg Area has something to offer for anyone looking to get involved with the local issues and politics. It serves as an excellent opportunity for college students to immerse themselves in the St. Pete community whether new to the area or a life-long resident.
The League is looking for students who are interested in our mission, “empowering voters, defending democracy.” Interested in social justice? LWVSPA focuses on racial justice, reproductive rights, and gun safety. If that’s not quite your thing the League also has committees working on sustainability and food politics. Students are also welcome to submit their plan to start a committee of their own. Though the League is a non-partisan organization we do take stances on issues. Among our reproductive rights work we strive to continue the fight in Tampa Bay from abortion access to evidence-based sex education.
The League of Women Voters of the St. Petersburg Area is one of the most active non-profit, volunteer based organizations in St. Pete. With a dedicated group of members, the League is able to host a variety of events and help to educate our community by giving non-partisan information to voters. They’ve also committed themselves to increase voter turnout by focusing on historically disenfranchised groups.

Students are valued civic participants in the League. Getting involved with the League is an excellent way to delve into local politics and serve the community. We are glad to partner with the USF Student Government to host two candidate forums for the upcoming St. Pete Municipal elections. The forums will take place at the USF Student Ballroom on September 28th and 29th. The forum on the 28th will be for the City Council candidates that have advanced through the Primary elections. The forum on the 28th will be for the two Mayoral candidates, Robert Blackmon and Ken Welch, that have advanced through to the Primary elections. These upcoming forums are an excellent way for students to witness some of the work LWVSPA does.
